New Equipment Brings New Possibilities to the Water Sciences Lab
Lincoln, Neb. – The University of Nebraska’s Water Sciences Laboratory (WSL) has acquired important new equipment through the Federal Excess Personal Property Utilization Program.  A Thermo ICS 5000+ Ion Chromatography System (ICS) and an Agilent 720 Inductively Coupled Plasma – Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) system have both been installed and will be used to expand methods and services available at the facility.

Quiñones puts coding expertise, global perspectives to use

Lincoln, Neb. —In scientific terms, University of Nebraska–Lincoln doctoral student Rubi Quiñones is an outlier.

The computer science major knows 10 coding languages and four spoken languages — English, Spanish, Chinese and Korean. Since meeting and marrying her Bangladeshi husband at Nebraska, she has begun adding Bangla to the list.

Her research in computer science also sets her apart from colleagues.

23 faculty awarded Nebraska Environmental Trust grants

Lincoln, Neb. —The Nebraska Environmental Trust has awarded 23 grants totaling more than $2.1 million to University of Nebraska–Lincoln projects.

The grants were awarded by the NET board last month, part of 113 projects receiving more than $18.35 million.

Team IDs key to sorghum’s heat resilience, aims to boost corn’s tolerance

Lincoln, Neb. —Although sorghum is known to be much more heat- and drought-tolerant than its close relative corn, the underlying reason for this difference is not well-established. Solving this mystery may be key to developing corn that is more resilient to high temperatures and the often dry summer conditions in Nebraska and other parts of the Midwest.
