Lincoln, Neb. —Researchers in UNL’s Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources received nearly $71 million in externally sponsored research funding during the 2022 fiscal year – the highest annual total in the institute’s history.

Graduate student works on project to image maize roots
Most crop imaging studies focus on what grows above the ground, like leaf angle and plant height. Agronomy & Horticulture graduate student Musa Ulutas is doing a deep dive on corn characteristics by working on a project to image corn roots.
He decided to take this novel approach while working in a lab run by Jinliang Yang, Agronomy & Horticulture assistant professor. Musa is part of a research team working to analyze the corn microbiome to determine reaction to varying levels of nitrogen in the soil.

McLean selected as next dean of Agricultural Research Division
Lincoln, Neb. —Derek McLean has been selected as the next dean of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Agricultural Research Division.
McLean, who currently serves as a senior science adviser in the Office of AIDS Research at the National Institutes of Health, will begin the appointment Jan. 1. He will succeed Archie Clutter, who will retire at the end of the year.

Nebraska net farm income looks to remain strong in 2022 according to new report
Lincoln, Neb. —Net farm income in Nebraska is projected to remain nearly unchanged from 2021 to 2022, at around $8 billion according to a new report produced in collaboration between the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Center for Agricultural Profitability and the University of Missouri’s Rural and Farm Finance Policy Analysis Center (RaFF).
