AFRI adresses the following challenges:
- Keep American agriculture competitive while ending world hunger
- Improve nutrition and end child obesity
- Improve food safety for all Americans
- Secure America's energy future through renewable resources
- Mitigate and adapt agriculture to variations in climate
In addition, AFRI will support research in six priority areas. These areas include:
- Plant Health and Production and Plant Products
- Animal Health and Production and Animal Products
- Food Safety, Nutrition and Health
- Renewable Energy, Natural Resources and Environment
- Agriculture Systems and Technology
- Agriculture Economics and Rural Communities
This Foundational Research RFA is targeted toward "building a foundation of knowledge critical for solving current and future societal challenges."
An additional RFA provides pre- and postdoctoral fellowship grants. Predoctoral fellowships are available for those who have research candidacy. Postdoctoral fellowships are available for those who have received their doctoral degree not earlier than January 1 of the fiscal year three years prior to the submission of the proposal and not later than nine months after the proposal due date.
